A striking new problem has been established in the Duddon Valley, with Fraser Corrie taking the first ascent of Tommy’s Arete (7C).
The problem sits on a unique rhyolite egg — a turret-like rock formation that stands out as one of the more characterful pieces of stone in the area. The climbing itself tackles a decent rounded arête, offering the technical, contact-strength-dependent sequence.
One of the appeals of this new addition is its accessibility. The boulder lies within easy reach of the road, making it a convenient target for those looking to tick a quality line without a lengthy walk-in.
Getting there: Approach from Ulpha and park in the lay-by on the right, close to the boulder. Cross the stile onto the public footpath, then head through the gate on your right — please keep the gate shut. From there, the boulder is easily spotted beneath the nearby trees.
