Fleswick Bay Boulders

Bega's Belief 7b+/V8Down at St. Bees Head, myself and Tom Newberry checked out yet another cool looking circuit, this time at the far end of Fleswick Bay.

The bouldering centres on two large blocks and a number of smaller satellites in the near vicinity. The two main events are perched on an Apiary Wall style platform and generally offer obvious well featured lines, over excellent flat landings. Of the two, the more southerly block is the best – a large rectangular cut boulder purveying around seven very good lines. For reference purposes I have named this superb block Bega's Boulder, after St. Bega, from whom St. Bees derives its name. As with all the areas at St. Bees, these blocks will have likely been climbed on before, however it is unlikely that the harder lines have seen any ascents.

The best of the new lines are, Tom's Arête and Off the Wall (both Tom's problems), and of my offerings, Forbidden Zone, Bega thy Neighbour, Bega's Belief and Heave-Ho! are the pick of the bunch. I have knocked up a basic topo featuring all the lines - click here - and will add some more images to the Facebook gallery. These lines are also likely to feature in my guide to the Northern Head, which is under construction.

Thanks Greg, I may well check the boulders out later this week when I should be up that way. I liked the bad buoys stuff too, some lovely problems although some seemed to stay a touch damp when I was there in april despite the dry weather. Take it easy mate.

Hi Ben,

The boulders themselves are not really affected by the tide, however the approach from the beach is, but only at the tides highest point. As for Fleswick Bay crag: this is quite nice but horrendously prone to seepage, even after long spells of dry weather. You can get to these block from the South Head too. So you could incorporate the Fleswick blocks into a session here.

Cheers.

Hi Greg,

good work on yet more new stuff and the topos, thanks again. How tidal are the Fleswick bay boulders by the way? Never been to the Fleswick stuff so I have no idea what the place is like.

Thanks.
