Eskdale Granite
Area Summary
The granite bouldering around the "L'al Ratty Railway" and Fisherground area, in Eskdale, is some of the longest established in Lakeland. The nearby Outdoor Education centre has for many years utilised the micro crags and blocks, whilst the resident instructors have used them as training for the greater ranges... and of course for fun in their own right. Many of the harder old school lines were climbed by Lakeland legend, Pete Whillance, whilst locals Phil Wake and Rob Fielding have added a more new school flavour to the area, as well as documenting the lines. Whilst much of the climbing is more circuit style bouldering, in Rob's Wall (7a+/V7), Rob's Wall SDS (7c/V9) and Strong Arete (7a+/V7), you have three of the best sterner lines in the Lakes.
Phil Wake's website, lakesbouldering.co.uk, covers the area extensively, however it has not been majorly updated for some time. The most up to date information, currently resides within the Lakes Bouldering Rockfax. The guide link here is essentially Phil Wake's info; structured into a more printable format, please visit his site for further info and images.
Tear Drop Boulder: If you are in the area be sure to pay a visit to the awesome Tear Drop Boulder (particularly if you climb 7B-C) just up the valley.
