Hollow Stone

Hollow Stone Area Summary

Recorded mainly for historical reference, the Hollow Stone on the east side of Haweswater (perched above Rowantree Beck/ Hopgill Beck), is a large boulder offering some highball, scary problems on fragile rock. Properly worked out by Tim Carruthers back in 2007, the block offers around half a dozen or so lines with the best being the central highball(!) proposition (Diseased Mind), which goes at around 7a+/V7. There is a slightly less worrying good(ish) line on the extreme left hand side of the block, which goes at a much more amenable grade and with a deck-out potential that is far less serious. The best remaining line is the obvious L-R traverse (The Hollow Man), which also goes at around the 7a+/V7 mark.

Access info: Park at a layby at the start of the Old Corpse Road to Swindale. Walk south down the road for 300 metres to the small bridge over the beck. Through the gate on the left and steeply uphill to the Hollow Stone, which can be clearly seen from the road (Grid Ref: 481 117).
