Craig Y Longridge
Area Summary
A fabulous and seemingly unrelenting wave of steep quarried gritstone, Craig Y Longridge, or simply Longridge as it's usually referred to, is said to be the jewel in the crown of Lancashire climbing. Famed for its various traverses, the classic bloc Big Marine and as an all-round training venue, the recent landscaping around the crag has also improved the quality and number of straight-up lines and links thereof. Due to the lack of a decent guide and the venues traverse-centric reputation, many of these brilliant lines do not receive the billing they deserve, however, in problems like The Gauntlet SDS, The Priory, Delta Force LH (AKA Fertile Delta SDS), In Excess SDS and Renal Failure you have some of the best and most imposing lines of their style anywhere! There is a WIKI for the crag, although this is sporadically updated at best and many lines are either not listed or hard to find. The topo available below is an aggregation of the best info sourced from the WIKI site combined with updated knowledge from a number of locals.
The aforementioned landscaping – a consequence of the development of the neighbouring housing estate – almost caused the demise of the crag. However, The BMC stepped in and purchased the crag for the benefit of climbers and as such you can now enjoy unhindered access to this great venue. Due to the immediate proximity of the nearby houses there are a number of conditions which have been agreed: no music, dogs or climbing before 10am or after sunset. Also, if you need the toilet please go discreetly on the other side of the road - i.e near where you parked.
